Staying Healthy While Traveling
It’s finally here!! You’ve been couped up indoors and working your butt off all year saving up to take a well-deserved vacation!!
As you look out the plane’s window and see the beautiful turquoise waters calling to you, you feel overwhelmed with sheer excitement as you can’t wait to dip your toes in. You feel lightheaded, but brush it off as you know it’s the excitement of what’s to come that is kicking in. You tell yourself; I’ll get to my room soon to relax and order room service before I hit those beautiful Caribbean sun rays!
You proceed to your hotel, check in to your gorgeous resort suite, put your stuff down and just exhale…
You still feel lightheaded? Even fatigued? Now, you’re wondering why do I still feel a little off? But you brush it off, because hey, you have been traveling for many hours, so it’s only natural to feel tired, right? In being the sensible person that you are, you decide to take just a quick nap, rest your body, and re-energize!
An hour later, you wake-up to a burning sensation in your throat, your body feels sore, and your nose is stuffy. A knot forms in your stomach, as you realize you have gotten SICK at the start of your vacation! It’s a gut punch!
Unfortunately, this happens much too often. If your mode of travel involves being exposed to lower air pressure at high altitudes, which mean you’re taking in less oxygen, you may have the tendency to feel drained. The last thing anyone wants to do while on vacation is lay in a bed all day, and not feel like they have the energy and miss out on all the exciting things to do and foods to try that your destination has to offer. Here are a few tips on how you can prepare your immune system and help to prevent yourself from getting sick while traveling.
- EXERCISE: 30 minutes a day, four days a week. This will rejuvenate your blood cells and boost your body’s ability to fight off illnesses. It will also prepare your body to be more active and give you more stamina as you embark on the activities of your trip.
- SLEEP WELL: Make sure you are getting 7-8 hours of restful sleep. It is essential to maintain a positive sleep schedule so that your body can balance itself out between exhausting activity and rest.
- EAT FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: You can attain lots of vitamins that will fight off illness by merely incorporating more fresh fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. For example, broccoli, strawberries, and bell peppers are excellent sources of Vitamin C which is an antioxidant and helps prevent an iron deficiency that will then boost your blood cells to transport oxygen more abundantly throughout your whole body!
- TAKE VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS OR ADD IN ESSENTIAL OILS:
- Rho Diola Rosea increases energy.
- Magnesium improves sleep.
- The elderberry improves immunity.
- Vitamin D supports general health.
- Probiotics can ease digestive issues.
- Peppermint oil can soothe headaches and fatigue.
- DRINK LOTS OF WATER: Water is essential in keeping a healthy immune system. It carries oxygen to your blood cells resulting in the proper functioning of your overall system. It flushes out and removes toxins from your body, which harm your immune system. It also prevents toxins from building up and placing stress on your immune system.
We all know that healthy living initiatives should be our top priority for the betterment of our lives. But when a trip is on the horizon, let’s make sure to take a few extra measures in the weeks leading up to the trip to ensure a healthy, well-rounded immune system is ready to take on the stress of traveling.
One thing everyone around the world can agree on … getting sick is never fun, but while you are on vacation, it can be flat out depressing! Remember, if you take a few small steps to help your body battle germs and be strong, the benefits will be very rewarding!
